I came across yet another article being shared today regarding this pesticide and the harmful cancer causing effects it can have. As a pregnant woman, I have become even more obsessed with creating a healthy lifestyle - which includes what I am feeding myself and my unborn child.
So why now? Why all the hype?
This has been going on for years, but the media has picked up on it again due to the recent case Johnson v Monsanto. Johnson was awarded 289.2 million dollars because it was proven that Monsanto was hiding the fact that they knew this herbicide could cause cancer!
This stuff is everywhere! There is no possible way to avoid it. It is in the foods we eat, the grass we lay on, the vaccines we inject, the soil we grow our plants. Everywhere!
Quick fact: Monsanto is the company that first decided to play God and begin to start genetically modifying our plants and seeds to create Roundup (glyphosate) resistant plants. For more on this I highly recommend the documentary GMO OMG.
So what does that mean?
The plants have been genetically engineered in a way that when the crop is sprayed with the herbicide the plant will not die. That is right, there are layers upon layers of glyphosate found on almost all commercially grown crops with corn, wheat and soy having the highest levels - and are then ingested into our bodies.
This information may not be new to you if you have ever watched a food documentary or researched even a little bit about GMO’s - but the fact is that so many people still do not have this information. The food that we all ingest daily has no required law to be labeled GMO or if it contains glyphosate.
Great, so it is everywhere, how can I avoid it?
The truth is you can’t avoid it completely but you can take measures to limit your exposure. The best thing you can do is purchase organic foods. Why is that? Because regulations have been put in place that organic food can not be GMO and can not use the pesticide glyphosate on it’s crops. This does not mean organic food does not contain pesticides of their own but they are regulated to be more naturally derived.
The recent study that I just came across was for quite a few different brands of popular hummus including Kirkland, Sabra, Cedar's and more. You will see that in this study organic and commercial really does make a difference, but it does not get rid of the toxic chemical glyphosate all together because our soils have become that contaminated. This research also proves that even brands that appear “natural” do not necessarily mean they are any better. To my own surprise Trader Joe’s came out to be the worst! A company that promotes healthy living, natural lifestyle and non GMO’s! The hummus that was tested from Trader Joe’s was not organic and showed up with a whopping 30.67 grams of glyphosate. Not cool TJ’s.
While the brand Lilly’s organic came in with a clean slate (woohoo!) you can see above that many of the organic brands showed significantly lower levels of the toxic chemical.
The proof is in the pudding right?
You can’t argue scientific facts, unless of course it was funded by big companies like Monsanto.
There are thousands more cases that we will have to wait and see the outcome of as people step forward with health issues due to their exposure. You can’t argue that there isn’t something happening over the past 30 years in the US and globally where we have become sicker, our children have become sicker and our environments have become more toxic. This could be just one of the many problems, but we have control over it to an extent.
With a business and marketing background I can tell you, you do have a choice in what we allow to happen! Supply and demand is the real deal. If organic food is the best we can do right now in a fight to stop this pesticide from making us ill, we can vote with our dollars. There are so many organic options on the market now, and so many stores with their own brand labels at affordable prices. Look for digital coupons, search the dirty dozen list and start there. Look for local options. Grown your own, if at all possible.
Still skeptical about organic food? Still think it is all marketing hype? I encourage you to purchase two peaches. One commercial and one organic and watch the difference in how they ripen and begin to mold. It is pretty shocking to see how quickly an organic peach will begin to mold, as nature intended it to be.
I encourage you to read up on glyphosate some more and at least understand if for no other reason, organic will contain less of this cancer causing herbicide. I encourage you to become educated for your own health and well being. In the end we all just want to feel good, look good, be happy, healthy and have a family that is also.
