The devilish word, DIET!
I have come to not be able to stand this word because it may as well just label itself correctly as FAILURE!
Like many of you, I have tried them all. I have done, low-carb, high-carb, Atkins, binge eating, paleo, plant based, vegan, vegetarian, weight watchers - that may be all of them.
What I have learned is, the moment you say you are no longer allowed an entire food group, it's all you crave. And I mean crave, like it's all you think about! I can't have bread - cool, everyone I see is eating pizza and I wan't to just have a lick of that crust!
I have researched food to the point where I question everything I eat. It may be a slight obsession, but it is my passion!
Let's Chill with the Labels.
Be real. You don't want to be labeled in your personal life, so why in your health and wellness? All a label does is stick you in a "category"! If you want to eat a steak today - cool. Tomorrow, lets keep it mostly meat free. You have to balance it out! You have to think about what you are ingesting into your body daily! Is it healthy? Is it from the earth? Is it local or organic? Or is it processed?
I am never going to sit here and tell you what to eat; unless of course you ask! What I will tell you, is you have to be comfortable with YOUR food choices. You have to be aware of the things you are choosing to fuel your body with! You have to have some type of food-U-cation!
If your diet is consisting of at least 50% processed foods - its time for a talk!
Feel when your body is lethargic. Feel when your body is ready to run and rock your day! What foods are you eating when you are feeling at your optimal levels? You have to find what is right for you!
If you live an active life, more carbs are great for you. If you live a very sedentary life, you need more protein in your diet. This constant protein push though is ridiculous! Plants give you plenty of natural protein! If you are going to eat meat, eat a quarter of what a "normal" portion is. You can't look at government guidelines for your diet and expect them to be correct! (I am sure you have questioned our government at some point before this post.) Each body is different and they have major companies that back things like the food pyramid, to just make profits. I promise you the nutritional labels on food are a joke! Just don't even bother. The ingredients on the other hand, VERY informative!
I personally believe that your diet needs to consist mostly of plants, and very little meat. Think of meat as a "treat". Is it hard to change your habits? Yes! Plants just naturally fill your stomach more than meat, or oils. You will feel fuller from veggies, but not for as long. And as a quick food for thought, who the heck made up the rule we only get three meals a day? I would rather graze, thank you!
The bottom line is, we need to change our relationship with food. We need to read, watch, and learn about what has been going on with our food systems over the past forty years. Because facts are facts and disease is out of control in this country! Is it meat consumption, maybe? Is it GMO's, maybe? Is it franken-wheat, maybe? You will find passionate people at every spectrum of our diets.
Paleo made me lose weight, low-carb made me lose weight, plant based made me lose weight. What I actually care about though, is what made me HEALTHIER? What made me FEEL BETTER? What caused my body to be relieved of symptoms of disease?
What I stopped doing was obsessing over every bite! I put away the scale because it causes self-hate, instead of self-love. I read labels, and do research on the best options out there. I buy local and organic foods, when possible. I don't obsess! I make sure 80% of my diet is whole foods, and yes I still drink wine and eat brownies!
Chill with your labels in every aspect of your life! Eat the foods that make you feel good on the inside, give you energy, and make your yearly check-ups a breeze!
Get informed. Stay humble. Love your body. Eat your veggies. And an occasional brownie.
